Theodore Capistrano Boborol is a film and television director in the Philippines who graduated cum laude from U.P.-Diliman with a B.A. degree in Broadcast Communication in 2000. Boborol has had a wide range of creative and production work experiences as a researcher, scriptwriter, story editor, script continuity supervisor, and assistant director before he studied film directing under the tutelage of the late Marilou Diaz Abaya in 2007. Since then, he has directed various drama series for ABS-CBN including “Angelito: Batang Ama” (2011); the remake of “Annaliza” (2013); and CMMA Best Drama Series, “Be My Lady” (2016). Boborol is also the National Winner for Best Directing (Fiction) in 2018’s Asian Academy Creative Awards for his latest drama, “Araw Gabi.”
Boborol made his film directorial debut with Star Cinema’s teen romantic comedy “Just The Way You Are” (2015). He rose to prominence for directing his second feature film, “Vince and Kath and James,” which won the Audience Choice Award in 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival. His third film, “Finally Found Someone,” was one of the highest-grossing films of 2017 in the Philippines. “Iska” is Boborol’s fourth film as a director. It is also his first non-romantic comedy film.
While the film typifies the dismal state of mental health care in the country and how it marginalizes the poor even more, Iska is also an ode to those who mother kids beyond their capacity and duty, armed with nothing but a sense of responsibility wrapped in love.
