INO BROCKA RETRO, PREMIERES, SPECIAL SCREENINGS AND BEST OF FILIPINO INDIES TO BE FEATURED IN CINEMALAYA CINCO
170 indie films will be screened in the 2009 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition on July 17-26, 2009 at the CCP, in addition to the 20 new films in the competition section.
Cinemalaya, which is the fifth since it began in 2005 and which is being billed this year as Cinemalaya Cinco, will pay tribute to National Artist for Film Lino Brocka with a retrospective of his films. To be shown are Wanted Perfect Mother, Santiago, Tubog sa Ginto, Cadena de Amor, Cherry Blossoms, Stardoom, Maynila sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag, Ina Ka ng Anak Mo, Jaguar, Bona, Binata Si Mister, Dalaga si Misis, White Slavery, Macho Dancer, Makiusap sa Diyos and Orapronobis. Christian Blackwood’s Signed Lino Brocka will be featured in this special section. All films are part of the Lino Brocka Collection of the CCP.
The Indie Ani section will show the best indie films of the year. These are 100 by Chris Martinez, Kamoteng Kahoy by Maryo J. Delos Reyes, Agaton & Mindy by Peque Gallaga, Fausta by Felino Tañada, Yanggaw by Richard Somes, Bente by Mel Chionglo, UPCAT by Roman Olivares, Alon by Ron Bryant, Fuchsia by Joel Lamangan, Kolorete by Ruello Lozendo, Motorcycle by Jon Red, Litsonero by Lore Reyes, Confessional by Jerrold Tarog, Imburnal by Sherrad Sanchez, Forgotten War by Carlo Marco Cruz, Melancholia by Lav Diaz , Padyak by Aloy Adlawan, Next Attraction by Raya Martin and Manong by Arnold Argano.
Nine full length digital films will compete for the 1st Cinemalaya Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) prize, a new section of the Cinemalaya. Vying for the special prize are Aurora by Adolfo Alix Jr., Baseco Bakal Boys by Ralston J., Karera by Adolfo Alix Jr., Boy by Auraeus Solito, Walang Hanggang Paalam by Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos, Prince of Cockfighting by Yeng Grande, Bayaw by Monti Parungao, Latak by Jowee Morel and Handumanan by Seymour Sanchez.
The Cinemalaya NETPAC Prize is given only to new full length independent works that will premiere at the Cinemalaya Festival but not participating in the competition. NETPAC is a worldwide organization of 29 member countries and is composed of critics, filmmakers, festival organizers, curators, distributors and exhibitors and film educators.
Slated for special screenings are Ditsi Carolino’s documentary Lupang Hinarang and the films Independencia by Raya Martin and Serbis by Brillante Mendoza. The documentary Walking the Waking Journey by Ferdie Balanag will have its premiere. Short films by filmmakers from the regions and schools such as DLSU, UP Film Institute, UP Viscom and Ateneo will be on exhibition.
The Cinemalaya Kids’ Treats will feature past Cinemalaya films such as Pepot Artista by Clodualdo del Mundo, Saan Nagtatago si Happiness, Batad, Gulong, Kadin, Pisay, Boses, Brutus,Andong, Diamante sa Langit, Maikling Kwento, Putot, Trails of Water, Angan-Angan, Gabon, My Pet, Parang Pelikula, Rolyo and To Ni.
The LGBT section (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) will feature Thank You Girls by Charlie Gohetia, Heavenly Touch by Joel Lamangan, Dose by Senedy Que, Selda by Paolo Villaluna and Ellen Ramos, The Amazing Truth about Queen Raquela by Olaf de Fleur Johanneson, Ded na si Lolo by Soxie Topacio, Quick Trip by Cris Pablo and Jay by Francis X. Pasion.
Cinemalaya Cinco is presented by the Cinemalaya Foundation, Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Econolink Investments Inc. Cinemalaya is an all-digital film competition aimed at discovering new Filipino filmmakers.
