‘Sunshine’, ‘Quezon’ lead 6th Pinoy Rebyu Awards Nominations

Sunshine, a raw drama about a promising athlete confronting an unwanted pregnancy, and Quezon, a sharp political drama that dismantles the myth of a nation-building strongman, topped the nominations for the 6th Pinoy Rebyu Awards, handed out by the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers, with eight nods apiece.

Sunshine, which opened commercially in July 2025 and sustained strong audience interest that led to an expanded theatrical run, received nominations for Best Film; Best Director and Best Screenplay (Antoinette Jadaone); Best Lead Performance (Maris Racal); Best Supporting Performance (Jennica Garcia); and three technical categories — Editing, Cinematography, and Original Score.

Quezon, the final installment in director Jerrold Tarog’s Bayaniverse trilogy, earned nominations for Screenplay, Lead Performance (Jericho Rosales), Ensemble Performance, and five technical awards — Editing, Cinematography, Production Design, Original Score, and Sound.

Joining Sunshine in the Best Film race are two documentaries: Bloom Where You Are Planted and The Road to Sydney. Bloom Where You Are Planted follows three land rights activists navigating home, family, and the constant threat of red-tagging, capturing the everyday humanity of those labeled dangerous. The Road to Sydney traces the journey of Jay Loyola as she transitions and builds her life across countries, celebrating self-realization through art and resilience.

Completing the top category are Magellan and Only We Know. Magellan dramatizes the 16th-century voyage of Fernão de Magalhães, blending conquest, obsession, and the human cost of faith and empire, immersing viewers in a painterly historical world. Only We Know traces the quiet, unfolding connection between a retired professor (Lead Performance nominee Charo Santos-Concio) and a widowed engineer (Dingdong Dantes), exploring the intimacy of companionship and the rhythms of life after loss.

Competing with Racal, Rosales, and Santos-Concio for Best Lead Performance are Dolly de Leon and Mylene Dizon (Habang Nilalamon ng Hydra ang Kasaysayan), JC Santos (Journeyman), Vice Ganda (Call Me Mother), and Geraldine Villamil (Republika ng Pipolipinas).

In Supporting Performance, alongside Garcia, nominees include Lucas Andalio (Call Me Mother), Will Ashley and Odette Khan (Bar Boys: After School), Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Leanne Mamonong (Open Endings), Joshua Garcia (Meet, Greet and Bye), and Rochelle Pangilinan (Child No. 82).

The acting categories are gender-neutral. Under SFFR rules, more than five (but fewer than ten) nominees may be included in the individual acting categories if they meet a required percentage of total votes.

The 6th Pinoy Rebyu Awards honor the best achievements in Philippine cinema of 2025. Eligible titles were films released between January 1 and December 31, 2025, in at least one Philippine cinema or on a legally accessible streaming platform. The SFFR is composed of 45 active reviewers of Philippine cinema.
