ABOUT

THE Cinemalaya Foundation is a non-stock, not-for-profit, non-government foundation, committed to the development and promotion of the Philippine independent film.

The Cinemalaya Foundation was established for the following purposes: to help develop and support the production of cinematic works of Filipino independent filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity; to discover, encourage, support, train and recognize gifted Filipino independent filmmakers; and to establish a network for exchange, communication, and cooperation among members of the independent film sector as we commit ourselves to the professionalization of film practitioners in the various aspects of film production through the Cinemalaya Institute.

The centerpiece of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is the Main Competition of full-length films, feature or documentary. Unlike other festivals where finished films are submitted, Cinemalaya’s finalists emerge from a pioneering grant program. Each year, up to ten projects are awarded financial support through a rigorous competition; their proponents undergo a 20-month journey from concept to finished film. These works premiere at the festival as the official finalists, competition for the Best Full-length Film.

A separate competition recognizes the work of filmmakers in the Short Film format.

CINEMALAYA INSTITUTE

Cinemalaya Institute: A Decade of Nurturing New Voices in Film

Nearly a decade since its founding in 2015, the Cinemalaya Institute has become a vital arm of the Cinemalaya Foundation’s mission to cultivate and professionalize independent filmmaking in the Philippines. What began as a modest program of short courses in producing, screenwriting, and basic filmmaking has since evolved into a year-found training hub for aspiring and emerging filmmakers.

The institute now offers a range of workshops, certificate programs, and masterclasses that cover directing, cinematography, editing, sound design, film criticism, and producing. It has steadily expanded its faculty to include both respected Filipino filmmakers and international mentors, creating an environment where students gain technical skills while being immersed in a culture of collaboration and artistic freedom.

Headed by acclaimed filmmaker Carlitos Siguon-Reyna, who used to head the New York University’s (NYU) Tisch school of the Arts Asia’s MFA program in Singapore, Cinemalaya Instituted draws faculty from leading Filipino film practitioners and international mentors. After the 2020 pandemic halt, it resumed in 2021 with virtual classes, adapting to the “new normal” while continuing to train future filmmakers in writing, producing, and directing.

Over the years, alumni of the Cinemalaya Institute have gone on to write, direct, and produce films that competed in the festival’s Man and Short Film Competitions, as well as other international film festivals. This strong track record demonstrates how the institute has grown into a pipeline that links education, mentorship, and exhibition.

CINEMALAYA FILM LAB: Shaping the Next Generation of Filmmakers

The work of the Cinemalaya Institute continues through the Cinemalaya Film Lab, which engages some 20 semi-finalists as part of the selection process for the Main Feature-Length Competition of the Cinemalaya Festival.

Participants undergo intensive modules covering every stage of film production: screenplay, directorial vision, cinematography, editing, production design, sound design, music, directing the actor, and production management.

Two major highlights define the Lab experience. The first is the refining of the concept, story, and treatment through group sessions where participants are encouraged to comment on one another’s work. This process culminates in the completion of screenplays, which are then submitted for another round of jury screening. The second highlight is a series of sessions on other aspects of filmmaking, culminating in the Producers’ Market, where participants pitch their projects to prospective financiers, distributors, and producers, gaining vital exposure and support.

By combining mentorship, training, and industry access, the Film Lab strengthens Cinemalaya’s mission to discover, nurture, and empower new voices in Philippine cinema.

As Cinemalaya continues to serve as the country’s premier independent film festival, the Institute ensures that its legacy lies not only in showcasing films but also in cultivating the next generation of storytellers. With its emphasis on craft, creativity, and community, the Cinemalaya Institute has firmly positioned itself as a home for those who seek to tell fresh and fearless stories in Philippine cinema.
