Featuring a virtual conversation with director JL Burgos

Dir. JL Burgos. 2024, 96 mins. DCP. Initially censored with an X-rating, Alipato at Muog is JL Burgos’s impassioned documentary about his family’s almost two-decades-and-counting search for his brother Jonas. A beloved organizer of peasant farmers, Jonas was abducted by state forces at a shopping mall in broad daylight, a governmental crime that clarifies the irredeemable nature of the current system. Burgos’s film is a headstrong and wholehearted cinematic expression of matured love and rage, and fully lives up to the Philippine rating board’s determination that it “undermine[s] the faith and confidence of the people in their government and/or duly constituted authorities.”
